Integrating Physical Activity Into Mental Health Services for Persons With Serious Mental Illness
In the general population, a strong relationship has been found between physical activity and mental health (1,2) as well as between physical activity and physical health (3). People who have serious mental illness, including major depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, often have poor physical health and experience significant psychiatric, social, and cognitive disability (4,5). Physical activity has the potential to improve the quality of life of people with serious mental illness through two routes—by improving physical health and by alleviating psychiatric and social disability. In this article, we first review the evidence for the benefits of physical activity in the general population and more specifically among individuals with serious mental illness.
